Across the top of the volunteer webpage it said:
Hand Written Letters is Our Mission.
Oh really? I love hand-written letters. They are literally, like my passion in life. This sounds pretty cool, but I really hope this isn't some kind of scam to get me to write a convict. One is enough!
As a Hope and Support Letter Writer, you will be sending handwritten letters to people all over the globe who are battling depression and other mental illnesses.
OMG! Love it! That's pretty much my other passion—mental health advocacy. And harm reduction. But seriously- How perfect is this?
Individuals applying to be a Hope and Support Letter Writer should have fair/decent handwriting and fair/good written communication skills.
I have fair/decent handwriting. I have fair/good communication skills. These people need people like me. And I am so totally excited to make gorgeous things to mail to complete strangers. That's my job now- professional artist. So I better get some practice and take some photos to use on my website! It'd be a shame to make dozens of fake envelopes just to take pictures of them and then just let them collect dust in a drawer somewhere.
That's where LAD came in, and hooked me up with a list of people I could make and send cards to.
LAD's unique volunteer portal helps connect people - no swiping left or right required. To get the attention and support they deserve, LAD recipients bare their soul, not their skin. Periodic story updates, feedback, and thank you's from recipients encourage volunteers to keep writing.
Did you drive drunk? Graffiti the side of the library? Maybe you're hoping to have your college application stand out from the rest.
Whatever the reason, if you have community service hours to complete, leave the orange vest and garbage bags in the closet this weekend.
LAD is a nonprofit, 501c3 charity organization, so the time that you spend writing letters can be added to college resumes and job applications, and may meet the standards for court-ordered community service in your area.
To make tracking your volunteer accurate,. Founder Robert Mason designed a easy-to-use Volunteer Portal, where your letters are logged and time spent writing is recorded. A thoughtful array of haptics show you how your efforts compare to others, what kind of feedback letters are getting and tracks the time you spend writing letters or making hugs down to the minute.
Next time you've got a volunteer commitment to fulfill- think LAD. I think sitting down to share your strength and hope with those in need is SO much more fun than picking up trash on the side of the road all afternoon.

I never thought of a to-do list as self care until a unicorn shared this advice with me. I added this sticker to each letter I made.
