Beginning Italic Calligraphy

Beginning Italic Calligraphy is a relaxed, beginner-friendly class designed to help students build confidence while learning traditional Italic lettering. Held in my office on Monday evenings from 6:30–8:00 pm (NE Broadway Avenue and 27th Avenue in Portland, near the Hollywood Fred Meyer) the class introduces calligraphy tools, techniques, basic strokes, and letterforms in a supportive, self-paced environment.
During your first visit, we’ll discuss your goals and explore options for achieving them. Some students enjoy following a structured six-week lesson plan with homework and a final project, while others prefer to drop in occasionally for guidance on a specific project or simply to practice alongside fellow scribes.
Whatever your learning style, the class offers a welcoming space to ask questions, develop skills, and connect with other lettering enthusiasts. Sessions are $15 each or five for $60. Click the button below for location details.
We learn Italic from Jaki Svaren's classic "Written Letters" and apply the lessons to create projects like weathergrams, greeting cards, framed quotations and holiday ornaments using a variety of pens, nibs, ink and paper.
