Since 1950, the members of the Portland Society for Calligraphy have created a distinctive culture of calligraphy; one rooted in teaching, community, craftsmanship, beauty, civic engagement and the belief that beautiful writing belongs in everyday life.
Class Projects
We apply the lessons to create projects like weathergrams, greeting cards, framed quotations and holiday ornaments.
Drop in Style!
I cover writing Italic with a broad edged pen in 6 sessions. It works best if they are taken consecutively, but my goal is to make it work if taken out of order. The class in ongoing, so if you miss a session, just wait for it to come around again!
Materials Provided
Just starting out? Portland Society for Calligraphy members have generously donated all the pens, paper and ink you'll need to complete the daily lessons free of charge until you have your own.
the manic italic Approach to education
1. Create spaces, not stages. Design environments where people participate instead of simply watching.
2. Provide tools, not prescriptions. Give people what they need to begin, then encourage them to develop their own voice.
3. Curiosity is more valuable than certainty. Good questions often matter more than quick answers.
4. Connection is part of the curriculum. Learning happens between people as much as it happens through instruction.
5. Failure is evidence of exploration. 'Mistakes' aren't interruptions to learning, or something to be worried about. They are an essential part of the process, and often the most effective way to learn.
6. Leave room for surprise. Some of the best discoveries are the ones no one planned.
