 Three Dimensional Calligraphy: Learn Braille with Orchid Hanni

This month we are proud to offer a chance to learn all about a 3-D script with the power to connect the words of sighted calligraphers to those with visual impairments - Braille. 

The LL&L day is divided into 2 sessions.

Morning Session 10:00 am-12:00 pm

Quiet writing - a peaceful time for serious scribes to do their thing, and everyone else to just work without making noise. Bring your own project. Hosted by Karina H. 

Afternoon Session 1:00-2:30 pm

Three Dimensional Calligraphy: Learn Braille with Orchid Hanni

Come learn braille with Orchid Hanni, a professional wheelchair skater! In this interactive class, you'll explore the history of braille and get hands-on experience using a slate and stylus to write your own messages. We'll cover braille basics and practice together. A special virtual guest, Coco Atama—a blind professional skater and motivational speaker—will join us to share their story. Join us and be part of bridging the communication gap through the power of braille!

Location: The Grotto Conference Center -8840 NE Skidmore (near NE Sandy & 82nd) Portland, OR

The LL&L study group is free, open to the public and welcomes all ages, skill levels & physical abilities.   It is always in-person and  committed to lowering barriers to learning the lettering arts by providing all the materials needed to complete the afternoon session. 

Can't make it on Saturday? LL&L happens every month on the third Saturday from 10:00-3:30 pm. See you there!

2nd Annual Sumi Party!

Join us on June 21st for a joyful day of creativity at the 2nd Annual Laugh Lines & Letters Sumi Party! Whether you're a seasoned calligrapher or just curious about brush and ink, this event is all about big strokes, bold expression, and community connection.

Drop in anytime between 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM. We welcome beginners and provide everything you need, so no need to bring your own supplies—unless you want to!

We’ll unfurl long rolls of rice paper across tables so you can try your hand (and brush) at the bold, fluid style that sumi is known for. You’ll have access to a wide variety of materials, including oversized and standard wolf-hair brushes, colorful stick inks, Moon Palace sumi ink, blank scrolls, and plenty of practice paper.

Pro tip: Don’t forget your apron—things are guaranteed to get a little inky.

This is a free, inclusive, and open event—bring a friend and come make your mark.

Snack and drinks provided- this is a party after all!
